The name “Haridwar” means “Gateway to Hari (Lord Vishnu)” and is also sometimes called “Hardwar,” meaning “Gateway to Lord Shiva.” This is because Haridwar is the starting point of the Char Dham Yatra (Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri).
The city is mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures such as the Mahabharata and Puranas. It has been a center of spirituality and meditation for sages and saints for thousands of years.
