Mussoorie - The Queen of Hills
About Mussoorie - Uttarakhand
Mussoorie is one of the most popular hill stations in India. Located in the state of Uttarakhand, this charming town sits at an altitude of around 2,005 meters (6,578 feet) above sea level. Known as the “Queen of the Hills,” Mussoorie offers breathtaking mountain views, colonial architecture, pleasant weather, and a peaceful environment that attracts thousands of tourists every year.
Just about 35 kilometers from Dehradun, Mussoorie is easily accessible and serves as a perfect getaway for families, honeymoon couples, solo travelers, and adventure lovers.
Mussoorie was established in 1823 by Captain Frederick Young of the British Army. During the British colonial period, it became a popular summer retreat for officers and their families. The cool climate and scenic beauty reminded them of European landscapes, making it an ideal escape from the heat of the plains.
The town’s name is believed to be derived from the “Mansoor” shrub (a local plant found in the region). Over time, Mussoorie developed into a well-planned hill station with churches, schools, libraries, and colonial-style buildings that still add to its charm today.
One of the most prestigious institutions in India, the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, is located here, where IAS officers are trained.
