The history of Nainital dates back to ancient times. According to Hindu mythology, the town is associated with Goddess Sati. It is believed that when Lord Shiva was carrying Sati’s burnt body, her eyes (Nain) fell at this place. This is why the sacred Naina Devi Temple was established here.
During British rule, Nainital became a popular summer retreat. It was founded as a hill station in 1841 by P. Barron, a British sugar trader. The British were attracted to its pleasant climate and scenic beauty. They developed schools, churches, and colonial buildings, many of which still stand today.
The town also served as the summer capital of the United Provinces during British India. Even today, the colonial charm can be seen in the architecture and old institutions.
